Shabbi Class starts April 27, 2015
Do you need to get up off the couch and just move your body? Let’s dance! Shabbi dance or mahraganat as it is now also called (which means festival) is the hottest, free style dance in Egypt right now. It is based of off a lot of hip hop and fast movements. Its kind of like Egyptian Beyonce. (We can all call our inner Beyonce to help us out ) This four class series will not be a choreography class. This is a FUN class, just to have a good time and work out and feel how Egyptians dance. There is a lot of oriental dance movement with shimmies, but also a new way of moving that is earthy and lower to the floor and hand gestures are used to interpret the song. Shabbi dance is also very sexy!
Shabbi is a dance that was made popular in the urban areas of Cairo, and the middle class and upper classes of Egypt consider the music vulgar, but Egypt’s economy is mostly that of lower classes and the music strikes a chord with them. The songs are often silly and don’t make sense but there are others that are political.
The god father is Shabbi is Ahmed Adaweya and Hakim and Saad El Soghayar and Abdel Baset Hamouda are also very popular in the last 15 years. Now there is Oka and Ortega, Sherine and Bosy and so many more!
Love the music, love the dance, and let’s have a great time.
